ब्राह्मण उवाच गङ्गाद्वारं प्रति महान्बभूवर्षिर्महातपाः भरद्वाजो महाप्राज्ञः सततं संशितव्रतः
The Brāhmaṇa said: "At the source of the Gāṅga, there lived a riṣi of great austerities. He was always rigid in his vows and he was extremely wise. His name was Bhāradvāja.
ब्राह्मण ने कहा: "गंगा के उद्गम स्थल पर, महान तपस्वी ऋषि रहते थे। वह हमेशा अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में दृढ़ रहते थे और वे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान थे। उनका नाम भारद्वाज था।
One day, the riṣi went to the Gāṅga to have his bath and saw there the āpsara Ghṛtācī, who had arrived before him and now stood there, having finished her bath.
एक दिन, ऋषि स्नान करने के लिए गंगा में गए और वहां अप्सरा घृतासी को देखा, जो उनसे पहले आई थी और अब अपना स्नान पूरा करके वहीं खड़ी थी।
Then a wind arose from the riverbank and removed the clothing from her body. Seeing her nude, the riṣi was afflicted with desire.
तभी नदी के तट से एक आँधी उठी और उसके शरीर से वस्त्र उतार दिए। उसे नग्न देखकर ऋषि काम से पीड़ित हो गए।
He had been celibate since boyhood. As soon as his mind felt desire, his semen dropped and the riṣi collected it in a wooden cup.
वह बचपन से ही ब्रह्मचारी थे। जैसे ही उनके मन में इच्छा उत्पन्न हुई, उनका वीर्य गिर गया और ऋषि ने उसे एक लकड़ी के प्याले में एकत्र कर लिया।

ततः समभवद्द्रोणः कुमारस्तस्य धीमतः अध्यगीष्ट स वेदांश्च वेदाङ्गानि च सर्वशः
From that was born a son, who became the learned Droṇa and who studied all the Veda-s and the Vedāṅga-s.
उससे एक पुत्र का जन्म हुआ, जो विद्वान द्रोण बना और जिसने सभी वेदों और वेदांगों का अध्ययन किया।

भरद्वाजस्य तु सखा पृषतो नाम पार्थिवः तस्यापि द्रुपदो नाम तदा समभवत्सुतः
Bhāradvāja had a king as his friend. His name was Pṛṣata and he had a son named Drupada.
भारद्वाज के मित्र के रूप में एक राजा थे। उसका नाम पृषत था और उसका द्रुपद नाम का एक पुत्र था।
Pārṣata, that bull among Kṣatriya-s, always used to go to the hermitage and play and study with Droṇa.
क्षत्रियों में पारशत नामक बैल सदैव आश्रम में जाता था और द्रोण के साथ खेलता तथा अध्ययन करता था।

ततस्तु पृषतेऽतीते स राजा द्रुपदोऽभवत् द्रोणोऽपि रामं शुश्राव दित्सन्तं वसु सर्वशः
After Pṛṣata died, Drupada became the king. Droṇa heard that Rāma wanted to give away all his riches.
पृषत की मृत्यु के बाद द्रुपद राजा बने। द्रोण ने सुना कि राम अपनी सारी संपत्ति दान करना चाहते हैं।
When Rāma was leaving for the forest, Bhāradvāja's son went to him and said, "O bull among Brāhmana-s! I am Droṇa and I have come to you for some riches."
जब राम वन के लिए प्रस्थान कर रहे थे, तो भारद्वाज का पुत्र उनके पास गया और कहा, "हे ब्राह्मणों में से बैल! मैं द्रोण हूं और मैं कुछ धन के लिए आपके पास आया हूं।"

राम उवाच शरीरमात्रमेवाद्य मयेदमवशेषितम् अस्त्राणि वा शरीरं वा ब्रह्मन्नन्यतरं वृणु
Rāma said: "O Brāhmaṇa! Now I have only my body left. Ask for either my body or my weapons."
राम ने कहा: "हे ब्राह्मण! अब मेरे पास केवल मेरा शरीर बचा है। या तो मेरा शरीर या मेरे हथियार मांग लो।"

द्रोण उवाच अस्त्राणि चैव सर्वाणि तेषां संहारमेव च प्रयोगं चैव सर्वेषां दातुमर्हति मे भवान्
Droṇa said: "O illustrious one! Give me all your weapons, together with the knowledge of releasing them and recalling them."
द्रोण ने कहा: "हे महाबली! मुझे अपने सभी हथियार, साथ ही उन्हें छोड़ने और वापस बुलाने की विद्या भी दो।"
The Brahmin said: The descendant of Bhṛgu agreed and gave those to him. On receiving them, Droṇa concluded that he had become successful.
ब्राह्मण ने कहा: भृगु के वंशज सहमत हुए और उन्हें दे दिया। उन्हें प्राप्त करने पर द्रोण ने निष्कर्ष निकाला कि वह सफल हो गये हैं।
On obtaining from Rāma that supreme weapon known as brahmāstra, Droṇa became extremely happy and became supreme among men.
राम से ब्रह्मास्त्र नामक परम अस्त्र प्राप्त करके द्रोण अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए और मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ बन गये।
Thereupon, Bhāradvāja's powerful son went to Drupada, a tiger among men, and said, "Know me to be your friend."
इसके बाद, भारद्वाज का शक्तिशाली पुत्र द्रुपद, जो मनुष्यों में एक बाघ था, के पास गया और बोला, "मुझे अपना मित्र समझो।"
Drupada said: "A man without learning cannot be a friend to one who is learned, nor one without chariots to one who has chariots, nor one who is not a king to one who is a king. Why do you desire our old friendship?"
द्रुपद ने कहा: "बिना विद्या वाला व्यक्ति विद्वान का मित्र नहीं हो सकता, न ही बिना रथ वाला व्यक्ति रथ वाले का मित्र हो सकता है, न ही बिना रथ वाला व्यक्ति उस व्यक्ति का मित्र हो सकता है जो राजा है। आप हमारी पुरानी मित्रता की इच्छा क्यों करते हैं?"

ब्राह्मण उवाच स विनिश्चित्य मनसा पाञ्चाल्यं प्रति बुद्धिमान् जगाम कुरुमुख्यानां नगरं नागसाह्वयम्
The Brahmin said: Turning his mind against the king of Pāñcāla, the intelligent one went to Nagasahrya, the capital of the Kuru-s.
ब्राह्मण ने कहा: पंचाल के राजा के प्रति अपना मन बदल कर बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति कुरु-वंश की राजधानी नागशहर्य में चला गया।
Thereupon, Bhīṣma took a lot of riches with him and offered his grandsons to the wise Droṇa as students.
इसके बाद, भीष्म अपने साथ बहुत सारा धन ले गए और अपने पोते-पोतियों को बुद्धिमान द्रोण को शिष्य के रूप में समर्पित कर दिया।
With the intention of humiliating Drupada, Droṇa assembled all his students and told them,
द्रुपद को अपमानित करने के इरादे से द्रोण ने अपने सभी छात्रों को इकट्ठा किया और उनसे कहा,
"O unblemished ones! When you have become skilled in the use of all weapons, as a preceptor's fee, you must promise that you will give me what I wish for.
"हे निष्कलंक लोगों! जब आप सभी हथियारों के उपयोग में कुशल हो जाएंगे, तो एक गुरु के शुल्क के रूप में, आपको वादा करना होगा कि आप मुझे वह देंगे जो मैं चाहता हूं।
When the Pāṇḍava-s became skilled in the use of all weapons and became successful in their labour, Droṇa spoke to them and reminded them about the preceptor's fee,
जब पांडव सभी हथियारों के उपयोग में कुशल हो गए और अपने काम में सफल हो गए, तो द्रोण ने उनसे बात की और उन्हें गुरु के शुल्क के बारे में याद दिलाया,
"Pārṣata Drupada is the king in Chatravatī. Take his kingdom away from him and give it to me quickly."
"चत्रवती में राजा द्रुपद हैं। उनका राज्य उनसे छीन लो और जल्दी से मुझे दे दो।"
Then Pāṇḍu's five sons defeated Drupada in battle. Taking him and his advisers prisoners, they showed them to Droṇa.
तब पाण्डु के पांच पुत्रों ने द्रुपद को युद्ध में हरा दिया। उन्होंने उसे और उसके सलाहकारों को बंदी बनाकर द्रोण को दिखाया।
Droṇa said: "O king of men! I again seek your friendship. One who is not a king cannot be a friend to one who is a king.
द्रोण ने कहा: "हे मनुष्यों के राजा! मैं फिर से आपकी मित्रता चाहता हूं। जो राजा नहीं है वह राजा का मित्र नहीं हो सकता।"
O Yajñasena! Therefore, I will divide the kingdom with you. You will be the king on the southern banks of the Bhāgīrathī and I on the north."
हे यज्ञसेना! इसलिये मैं तुम्हारे साथ राज्य का बँटवारा कर दूँगा। आप भागीरथी के दक्षिणी तट पर राजा होंगे और मैं उत्तर में।"

ब्राह्मण उवाच असत्कारः स सुमहान्मुहूर्तमपि तस्य तु न व्येति हृदयाद्राज्ञो दुर्मनाः स कृशोऽभवत्
The Brahmin said: "The thought of that great insult never left the king's mind for a single instant. Being miserable, the king became thin."
ब्राह्मण ने कहा, "उस महान अपमान का विचार राजा के मन से एक पल के लिए भी नहीं गया। दुखी होकर राजा पतला हो गया।"
